Peploe was the eldest and most successful of the four main Scottish Colourists. The end of WW1 seems to have inspired Peploe to begin a series of still lifes for which he is best known and most celebrated.He lived most of his life in Edinburgh apart from two years in France, he also made a life long habit of painting trips to Northern France where be became influenced by Manet and the Impressionists, to Matisse and the Fauves.

Painting with bright and pure colour, Peploe strove to paint the perfect still life, coming nearest to his ideal in the late 1920's.The fruit dish and glass vase, as well as roses,appear in many of his paintings for well over a decade.
